IN GAOL ALL THE TIME
MISSING AGED WOMAN SURPRISE FOR POLICE SYDNEY, Aug. 11. A missing 79-year-old -woman described as a wealthy widow, for whom the police had been searching during the week-end was within their reach all the time, though they did not find this out till late last night. She was in Long Bay gaol waiting trial on a charge of shoplifting.
The woman left the home of friends where she was living in the exclusive suburb of Double Bay last Friday. When she did not return her friends notified the police. In doing so they gave such details of her connections that it was not deemed necessary to check the police records. Last night, nvhen plans were being made to intensify the search, the police records were consulted. It appeared that the woman had given her correct name when charged with shoplifting and had been remanded in custody to appear on August 18. The woman’s son told the police that she must have suffered a temporary loss of memory induced by age.
