TOLL OF THE ROAD

ACCIDENTS IN JULY NINE DEATHS AFTER DARK “Ten people were killed in traffic accidents during July,” said the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. G. L. Laurenson, in a statement to the press. “Although this is the lightest month since February last, this brings the total road deaths this year to 137 compared with 114 for the seven months of 1946.” Of those killed, five were pedestrians, three were the occupants of motor vehicles, one was a motor cyclist and one a push cyclist. “It is noteworthy that, of the 10 fatal accidents, nine occurred during the hours of darkness,” said Mr. Laurenson. “Although it should be clearly evident, that far greater care is required at night, many road users do not appear to be sufficiently aware of the additional dangers on the road after dark.

“Too many pedestrians still do not wear light-coloured clothing or do not carry something white so that they can be seen more easily; too many cyclists are riding unlighted bicycles or bicycles without red rear reflectors at night; too many motorists outdrive their headlights at night with speeds too fast for conditions.

“Greater danger must be compensated bv additional care.” concluded the Commissioner. "Again I would appeal to everyone .to exercise greater care when on the roads at night.”
