TOKOMARU BAY RUGBY

VISIT BY H. 5.0.8. TEAMS (Herald Correspondent.) Tokomaru Bay Rugby Sub-Union were the hosts to Gisborne H. 5.0.8. on Saturday when the home senior B reps, met the Gisborne seniors and the loKomaru juniors met the visiting third grade. The visit was in support of the H. 5.0.8. nominee in the queen carnival campaign of the Poverty Bay union. Neither match was up to the standard expected, although the junior match provided better footballThe visitors won the senior match by the comfortable margin of 16 points to nine after a first half when they were not seen to advantage. The home side won the junior game by nine points to six. The ’senior game was set under way by ■ the queen candidate, Miss Connie McCallum, who kicked off for F 1.5.0.8. Tokomaru were on the defensive for the first quarter-hour, but rallied and reached the Gisborne line to Parata over in a good position. The kick failed. The next success was a try scored by Jack Colbert near the corner flag. Half-time came without addition, but early in the second spell Gisborne showed speed in a back movement capped with a try by L. Gibson. Archibald converted. T. Torrie was responsible for the next score a few minutes later when he crossed wide out to put the visitors two points in the lead. An offside penalty in the visitors, twenty-live allowed Joe Pewhairangi to put Tokomaru one point ahead- Two tries in quick succession gave the visitors the game, however. Candy scored the first and Gibson the second, the last try being converted by Archibald to make the score: H. 5.0.8. 16, Tokomaru Bay 9. Mr. Jim Morgan was the referee. In the curtain-raiser, the Tokomaru junior reps, provided some fast football. David Hadfteld opened the score after a fast back movement. Gisborne replied when the home full-back was caught &in front of his own posts. From the melee Parkes made a neat interception and scored. Early in the second spell a penalty kicked by P. Planten put the visitors three points in the lead. Trevor Davidson, one of the most useful forwards in the home pack and one of the few in the team who was tackling well, was much in evidence. A neat kick from Skipper Kopua put Tokomaru in a good position and Davidson and Hadfteld were together in a movement that put the latter over to equalise.
