DAVIS CUP TENNIS

AUSTRALIANS’ EASY WIN

MONTREAL, Aug. 8. Australia defeated Canada in the Davis Cup tie when Bromwich and Long crushingly defeated Edgar Lanthier and Gordon McNeil, 6 —2, 6—l, 6—o in the doubles.

The whole match took only 46 minutes. The last set was over in 13 minutes.

Long’s well-nourished smashes and Bromwich’s angular drives and volleys repeatedly left the Canadians standing.

The Canadians were erratic and intimidated and offered only the nominal resistance in each set. It was a purely routine exercise for the Australians to take the match and qualify to meet Czechoslovakia, the winners of the European zone. AUSTRALIA BEATS CANADA (10.30 a.m.) MONTREAL, Aug 10. Australia beat Canada in the Davis Cup tie s—o.5 —0. Brown beat Rochon, 6—3, 9—7, 6—2, and Pails beat Macken 6—4, 6—2, 6—2.
