WIDESPREAD TRIBUTES
LATE MR. A. S. RICHARDS MANY ATTEND FUNERAL. (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Aug. 9. Many representatives of the Legislature. local bodies and Labour and industrial movement, attended the funeral of Mr. A. S. Richards, M.P. for Mount Albert, yesterday afternoon. The cortege from his late residence in New North road to the crematorium in tlie Waikumete Cemetery included more than 70 motor cars. Four cars carried floral tributes sent from many parts of New Zealand. A short service at the late Mr. Richards’ home was conducted bv the Rev. F. A Parker. Methodist minister of Kingsland, and Mr. T. T. Garland. Only members of Mr. Richards’ family and close political associates attended, but a large crowd gathered outside in the garden and on 'he street.
Six Auckland members of Parliament acted as pallbearers at the house. They were Messrs. A. G. Osborne, F. Langstone, W. T. Anderto/i, C. R. Petrie, T. E. Skinner and T. P. Paikea. At the crematorium the pallbearers were the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser; the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E. Parry; the Attorney-General, Mr. H. G. R. Mason; the Postmaster-General, Mr. F. Hackett; the member ot the Executive Council representing the native race, Mr E. T. Tirikatene; and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland.
Others present included the Leader of the Legislative Council, Mr. D. Wilson; the national president of the Labour Party, Mr. J. Roberts; the president of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee. Mr. R. F. Barter; the secretary of the Auckland Trades Council, Mr W. Ashton; the Mayor of Mount Albert. Mr. H. A. Anderson; the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. A. C. Allum; the chairman of the Auckland Grammar Schools’ Board, Mr ,1. Stanton; and many private members of Parliament from both parties.
