DEATH IN TAURANGA
DR. J. P. WALKER Dr. John Philip Walker, of Tauranga, formerly ship’s doctor of the Awatea and other Union Company liners, has died, need 69 years. Dr. Walker practised in Yorkshire until 1930, when he .came to New Zealand. He settled in Waipawa, Hawke's Eay, for a short time and then joined the service of the Union Steam Ship Company, being first posted to the Monowai. • He was appointed to the Awatea in 1936. when she was commissioned for the Tasman service
Dr Walker served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War and was awarded the M.B.E. He joined the New Zealand Medical Coins after the outbreak of the Second World War and was for a time stationed at Rormotoi. He was an officer of the Venerable Order of St. John. Dr. Walker retired to live in Taurnnga in 1943. He is survived by one sen. .
MR. JAMES MARCHBANKS (P.A.I WELLINGTON. July 7. The death occurred this morning of Mr. James Mnrchbanks, C M.C.. former engineer and general manager of the Wellington Harbour Board, at the age of 95 years.
Mr. Mnrchbanks retired in 1932 from the post of general manager and chief engineer of the Wellington Ha r bour Board. He was educated at Otago TTnivorsk” and was employed by the Public Works Department until 1990. much of his work being in connection with railway construction In 1990 he was appointed assistant engineer to the Mnn-'watu Railway Company and in IPO7 he assumed full charge of this line When the line was purchased by the Government Fir MweTba’-’-c ww appointed engineer to th n Wellington Fwbonr Board taking office in Mav. 1999. Mr. Merchbnnks served on many important commissions
