N.Z. GIFT TO MRS. ROOSEVELT

ARTISTIC_CABINET EX-SOLDIERS’ WORK MEMORIES_OF TOUR TRIBUTE TO DOMINION (11a.m.) • NEW YORK, May 2. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, in her daily column in the WorldTelegram, reports the receipt from Sir Carl Berendsen, N.Z. Minister in Washington, of a most beautiful cabinet made of a variety of New Zealand woods by disabled veterans of New Zealand. The cabinet contains volumes of photographs and clippings relating to her visit to New Zealand and also a volume of clippings of matter published at the time of her husband’s death. Mrs. Roosevelt said photographs revived memories of New Zealand’s very beautiful countryside and ‘‘how courageous and independent her people are and how well her men and women stood up under the sacrifices of war.” Remarking that there is little great wealth in New Zealand as far as she could see, she added that there was no great poverty either. She was amused when it was pointed

out that New Zealand trout, transplanted from the United States, thrived so wonderfully. They were now many times larger than those in their original habitat. After paying tribute to New Zealand’s warm hospitality to American servicemen, Mrs. Roosevelt thanked the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, for his kind thought in sending the gift which will be placed in the Roosevelt Memorial Library at Hyde Park.
