13 YEARS’ SERVICE RECENT RETIREMENT On behalf of the Manutuke Guide committee, Mesdames T. Preston, W. G. Coppin and Miss Erma Buscke met recently at the home of Miss E. Davies, Rawin'street, Gisborne, to present Miss E. Newman, retiring captain of the Manutuke Girl Guide Company, with gifts as a mark of appreciation from the committee and parents of the district for her work with the Grades and Brownies over the past 19 years. The presentation took the form of a beautiful purse and a handsome honeysuckle walking stick inlaid with New Zealand woods. A lovely bouquet of mixed roses was also presented to Miss Newman bv the president on behalf of Mrs J. E. Daulton. vice president. who was unable to attend. An apology for absence was received from Mrs .}'. S. Nugent, divisional commissioner. Mrs Preston said that the committee of the Manutuke company was very sorry indeed that Miss Newman was unable to be present at a function that had been arranged at the mission home to honour her magnificent work during the past 19 years. The committee deeply regretted that for health reasons and under doctor's orders Miss Newman had seen fit to resign from hei much-loved work. The parents of the Guides and Brownies also wished to express their deep thanks for manv kindnesses and realised that many difficulties had had to be met over the .tears. Miss Newman’s loving nature and Christian spirit rad surmounted all obstacles, however, and site had indeed done well during her long term of office with the Guide movement. In reply, Miss Newman thanked the committee and parents for their good Wishes ar.d much-appreciated gifts, and also for the support that had been given her. She said that she could not have carried on without their most loyal co-operation and would always re member the very happy days she had soent at, Manutuke which she so regretted it was now necessary to give up. Following afternoon lea. the presi dent, on behalf of the committee and parents, wished Miss Newman the very best of haopiness and trusted that she would remain her health and be among them again in the future. Thanks were given to Miss Davies for the loan of her home for the oc-' casion.
