FORCE OF 2400 MEN
ARMY IN JAPAN 2000 NEW RECRUITS AIR FORCE TO REMAIN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 2. The Minister of Defence, Mr. F. Jones, announced that the New Zealand Army component of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force will be reduced from a brigade group of approximately 4200 personnel to a brigade on a reduced basis of 2400, all ranks. This reduction will be effected as the relief of the present Army component in Japan is arranged. Of the number of 2400 that will constitute the new Army force, 2000 will be sent from New Zealand and the remaining 400 will be found from volunteers with the present relief force in Japan who have engaged to remain on for a further period of service. The Royal New Zealand Air Force squadron, totalling ' approximately 300 officers and men, will be maintained.
