ALLIED POLICE SUBDUE ITALIANS TEAR-GAS AND HOSES EMPLOYED * MAY DAY PARADE IN MOSCOW’S SQUARE S (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (11 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. British, American and civil police in Trieste used tear-gas, water hoses and mounted squads to scatter an anti-Allied demonstration by over 5000 Italians after the May Day celebrations. The demonstrators attempted to parade despite the ban on processions and stoned the police.

TEHERAN.—The military Governor of the Persian Capital is reported to have banned all meetings and demonstrations.

Day throughout European ATHENS. —The Greek Government banned demonstrations but the Leftists planned work stoppages in Athens. BELGIUM AND NORWAY celebrated the day as a legal holiday for the first time. PALERMO.—Six persons were killed, including a woman, and 20 were injured when unknown persons hiding in the hills surrounding a nearby village fired machine-guns at 4000 workers going to a May Day celebration. HERFORD—Twenty thousand people at a demonstration in Dusseldorf heard Fritz Stahl call for increased food, a halt in dismantling machinery for reparations and greater participation by the unions in State affairs. In widespread demonstrations in the Ruhr there were many banners bearing slogans: “Give us bread. We are hungry.”
