SCOUTS ABROAD
WORLD JAMBOREE GISBORNE FAREWELL ENVIABLE EXPERIENCE Three Gisborne Scouts who leave this week-end to join at Wellington, the New Zealand contingent for the World Jamboree at Paris were entertained and farewelled at a gathering of fel-low-Scouts, cubs and relatives held on Wednesday evening in the Parish Hall. The lads are Scouter Keith Redstone and Scouts John Hebenton and Eric Faulkner, whose departure from New Zealand is scheduled for May 17. They will be abroad for seven months. The farewell function was participated in by the Mayor, Mr N. H. Bull, who addressed a message of congratulation and advice to the young representatives of the district Scout movement in what he described as an outstanding enterprise which bear the happiest results both to the individuals concerned and to the community in which they would continue to live after their return. Mr Bull pointed out that the Scout movement had, in addition to its obligations to community and nation, a duty to spread understanding on an international basis; for it recognised that understanding was half-way to the solution of any problem. Benefit of Travel Experience If all the peoples of the earth could be led to a sympathetic knowledge of each other's troubles and aspirations there would be less risk of international conflict, he held. The three ld'ds who would proceed abroad to represent Gisborne in 'the international jamboree would learn much during their tour, and assuredly would benefit in themselves and as members of the community by their experience. Short farewell addresses also were delivered by Mr L. Grey Barton, chairman of the East Coast Scout County Council, by Mr A. Blackburn district commissioner, and by Mr V. S. Caulton, a former district commissioner in the movement, who wished the three Gisborne lads a happy and profitable experience during their tour abroad. The programme included a number of stage items, including a recitation bv Master M. Alexander, a violin solo by Scout B. Price, accompanied by Mrs J. Elliott a Maori song by Cub-master A. Poole a pianofort selection by SeaScout D. Kohn. a monologue by Miss J. Gregory with Miss Allen at the piano and a community sing. The National Anthem closed the proceedings.
