STORTFORD SALE QUALITY SOUGHT AFTER HASTINGS, May 1. Quality sheep again sold on a strong market at Stortlord Lodge yesterday, when a short yarding of 60G0 head- was yarded. The top price of the season, 20s Id. was obtained for shorn wether lambs, this figure being paid for a particularly attractive draft. Other good shorn wether lambs sold at from 27s lid to 28s 3d. Values for small-grown wether lambs, off snears, ranged from 22s 6d to 2os, witn medium to good woolly wether lambs making 26s 6d to. 28s 6d. Small ewe lambs sold at 245. and small Down-cross iambs at 235, 9d. Wethers again commanded attention, being emoted at from 32s fid to 335. Small two-tooth ewes realised 27s Id: five and six-year ewes, 265; and six-year ewes, 225. Top prices of the season were paid for botn wethers and ewes in the fat sheep section Competition was strong and values generally advanced by Is a head. Extra heavy wethers topped the season's selling at 41s Id. Other heavy wethers made 39s 4d to 40s Id, with prime selling at 37s 4d to 37s lOd. medium at 35s 4d. and two-tooths at 38s lOd. Good rings brought 37s 4d. Store Cattle in Demand The store cattle market showed an awaited improvement when a good bench of buyers competed keenly for anything showing quaiitv in the entry of 770 head. It was the best sale of the season, with rising two-year Hereford steers at up to £lO 16s. Other good 18-month steers sold at £9 2s 6d to £9 11s. and smaller down to £7. Cattle a year older made £ll, with 3Jyear steers making £l2, and bullocks £l3. Empty cows were traded at £8 17s to £9 10s. With an entry of 225 head of beef, buteners were offered a better selertion than_ ior some weeks, and as a result values eased a shade, to be about on schedul.
