BIGGER AND BETTER FIELDS FOR HAWERA RACEGOERS

(Herald Special Service.) QUALITY and quantity are engaged on the opening day of the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting, which opens in Hawera tomorrow and will be concluded the following week. In comparison with last year, far bigger fields are engaged and of better class so the meeting should be a better one financially and from a racing point of view. Hawke’s Bay stables will be represented by only Kihnanagh, Epping, Kitty wake, and Precedency and with the exception of Epping all have shown form of late. The betting will be win-and-place, and the going is expected to be “easy.”

TAN6AHOE HURDLES The meeting opens with the Tangahoe Hurdles, in which Voltaire is topweight on the 10.12 marie. Last season he won this event with lib. more than he now carries and won again the second day with 11.9 so that as he won at the last Trentham meeting this Croupier gelding must be one of the fancied ones now. Bencvc, who last National impressed in the hack hurdle department when winning twice, is No 2 on the list and at 10.4 would appeal if it was known definitely that he was racing fit as he has only had two races of recent dale and that on the fiat. Roto

PRINCE REVEL, 7.11, is passed over in favour of the Fcilding winner EMERGE. 7.10. DRAMBUIE, 7.0, Hunting Park, 7.0, BROIEFORT STAR, 7.2, and PETER THEIO, 7.0, may do best of the remaining lightweights.

Parcra, 10.2, will riot be neglected by the betting public as he is racing fit, while Expcllant, 10.1, may not be quite as forward. Kilmanagh, 10.1, is also in the steeplechase, but if started in the hurdles would not be thrown in the discard as she has 181 b. less than what she carried into third place recently in Hastings. Matapan, 10.1, won in Hawke’s Bay last winter, but may not be as forward now as then. Provider, 9.13, will be fancied and now meets Voltaire on 41b. better terms -than when running second to him at Trentham on March 15. Whackie, 9,10, at home on winter going might surprise. Foxland, 9.0, won last Saturday and on account of that will not be at the same good price. Of the others the most likely ones are Peria Prince, 9.7, and Foreign Coin, 9.4 ~ TELEGRAPH HACK Playtos, 9.0, heads the list in the sixfurlong Telegraph Hack Handicap and may be one of the favourites, too. Hunting Mac, 8.9, a good hurdler, is not recommended, although a gelding with his speed and on a track to his liking might surprise. Lady Merit, 8.5, was second last Saturday, while Mangarakau. 7.13, has no form this- season. Neville. 7.13. is a recent maiden winner. Last Saturday at Waverley Nuptial, 7.12, ran a poor race in the High weight, but maybe the conditions were not suitable, lirammerton, 7.11, was in the money the other day, as also was Bian Rouge, 7.7, but in a maiden event. Superior Fox, 7.7, won at his last effort so is included among the possibilities. The winner dies not appear to be among the rest! haweraThandicap ~ STONY BROKE won easily last Saturday wiln 8.10 and now has 9.4; his consistency is not overlooked. UDELESS, 9.0, on Waverley form, will need to do a little better to beat the top-weight. FORT ROYAL, 8.12, was started last Saturday but failed to finish in the first four. Back to sprinting he may do better. YOUNG TRENT, 8.9, is not liked over this short course but the free-go-ing FORTUNE’S SMILE, 8.7, might surmise as he won this race last year. MOLLY MARTIA, 8.6, failed badly at Waverley. SECOND SEAL, 8.6, has no recent form to help. OYMONDY, 7.12, is coming down in weights and might make amends for h's Manrwntu failure.

PATEA HACK HANDICAP There is not a very flash lot in the nine-furlong hack event in which Hunting Park, third twice last Saturday at Tauranga, heads the list with 9.0 and should be included in a final summing-up as also shouldPreccdcncy, Mr. Pym, Man-Power, Fairhomc and Victory Dawn, who is well overdue but who is reported to be galloping impressively. EGMONT STEEPLECHASE RED GLARE, 11.9, one of the most brilliant steeplechasers in the Dominion. will be sure to find support in the two and a half mile Egmont Steeplechase. His last win was at Awapuni over country in July, when he carried 11.7 over three miles. He is in forward condition and looks the logical favourite. MODERATE, 10.7, will need a race, before being recommended. EPPING, 10.4, looks definitely in need of a race, but one can never tell in a cross-country race as a good jumper is always 'to be considered. VOLTAIRE, 10.4, is a newcomer in this .department and is also an acceptor in the hurdle race. ■> POLITICAL BOY, 10.0, won twice on this course 12 months ago, but has . not won since. ABDICATE, 9.13, is a good jumper over hurdles under adverse conditions and at Awapuni has been jumping the country impressively. He will be the first Salmagundi to start in a steeplechase KILMANAGII, 9.13, second last year in this same race, is now in decidedly better order and on the 9.12 mark can not help but appeal. EXPELLANT, 9.8, is not fancied. GAY ROUEN, 9.8, on his jumping, is never left out of calculations. OEMO, 9.7, won well last Saturday and he should beat all those that he beat the other day; his form last weeit is well commented upon by those who saw that iace. LAST MATCH, 9.2,. a seasoned jumper, is given a jumper’s chance.

JUVENILE HANDICAP The only form offering among the two-year-olds is possessed by the first five on the list. Sir Royal, 8.7, won earlier in the season, but his form since has not been so good. Distinction, 8.6, was made favourite at Levin with fifth has best, but that race should have proved beneficial. Early Astir, 8.2, has yet to win. but was second on Easter Monday to Bronstar at Tauherenikau. The Defaulter filly Faultina, 8.2, has speed and the five furlongs should suit her; she won at Easter. Kittivvake, 8.0, in her last three starts has been first, third and second respectively. She is a good beginner and lights on gamely, so is a consideration. Thimble, 7.11, the half-brother by Theio to Don Quex, has a second among his efforts. Of the others little is known.

McRAE HANDICAP young Trent, 8.9, who is virtual topweight in the Mcßae Handicap, has not shown his best lor some time, but it was this time last year, or a little earlier, that he struck form. Dink’s Own, 8.7, is a bit of a problem to sum up. but occasionally runs a good race and has won on winter going; in fact, he won the second day at this meeting 12 months ago. Loyal Bian, 8.3, prefers the going heavy and seldom runs a bad race. Hulabaloo, 7.12, is not far from striking his best, while Honora, 7.7. on his second on Easter Monday to Dougal over a mile at Ellerslie, might be a possibility. La Fillettc, 7.6, is not consistent. Titahi, 7.3, may be all the better for the race he had the other day in the Waverley sprint and has won' on soft going. Yandra, 7.2, was fourth at Waverley, where Silver Wedding, 7.1. and Baruch, 7.0, now engaged again, were second and third respectively. TAWHITI HACK The last race is the seven-furlong hack race, the Tawhiti Handicap. _ Most of the acceptors are engaged earlier in the day so some guide may be obtained by these efforts.
