LABOUR PARTY MEETS

GISBORNE ACTIVITIES MOTIONS OF CONDOLENCE There was a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Labour Party, held at the Selvyn Hall, Derby street, on Monday evening. Mr. A. Thomas presided. In moving a motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. D. G. Sullivan, Mr. Thomas said that the Labour movement of New Zealand had suffered a great loss with the passing of Mr. Sullivan. ' Motions of condolence were also moved with the relatives of Mr. Justice O'Regan and the relatives of Mr. V. Jamieson. Mr. Jamieson was a very prominent member of the Labour movement in Gisborne for many years. He bad been living in Wellington for the past five years. Reports on the activities of the social committee and the combined committee of the Labour Party branch and the Junior Labour League were submitted by Messrs. C. Whitley and R. A. Keeling respectively. It was decided to hold future meetings of the branch in the general labourers’ rooms in Peel street. The branch decided to donate a trophy for competition among members of the Junior Labour League. A discussion took place on the con-sumer-producer co-operative movement and it was decided to invite a member of the. organisation to address members of. the branch at some future date. Mr. E. L. Cullen’s Visit A very pleasant evening was spent at Low’s on Tuesday evening when Mr. E. L. Cullen, Minister of Agriculture, addressed members of the trades and labour movements. Mr. A. Thomas, in introducing Mr. Cullen to the meeting, conveyed the party’s congratulations to Mr. Cullen on iiis elevation to Cabinet rank, a position. said Mr. Thomas, he was sure he would quite capably administer. Mr. Cullen's address dealt chiefly with the Government's plans for the future. At the conclusion of his address the chairman called upon Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P. to address a few words to the meeting. In doing so, Mr. Thomas said that it was the first opportunity members had had of publicly congratulating Mr. Coleman on his recent appointment as Under-Secretary to the Minister of Works, a position which he richly deserved. Mr. Coleman, thanking him, said that he was not in the position to allocate houses or to say where they were to be built, but his duty was to try and expedite materials for the building of the houses. Mr. J. Mastrovich extended congratulations to Mr. Cullen and Mr. Coleman on behalf of the Trades Council. At the conclusion of Mr. Cullen’s address a motion of thanks was moved by Mr. W. W. Jonasen and seconded by Mr. C. Cowan and carried by acclamation.
