BIG OPIUM HAUL
CHINESE SMUGGLING ATTEMPT AUSTRALIAN SHIP’S CREW (11.45 a.m.) VANCOUVER, April 30. Opium worth 25,000 dollars in the underworld markets was seized from the Australian freighter Suva, which docked at Vancouver yesterday, and two Chinese members of the crew were arrested in the biggest smuggling attempt here since pre-war days. The police found the opium on a member of the crew and searched all night before finding sixty ounces hidden aboard. The opium is believed to have been smuggled aboard the Suva in Sydney harbour from another ship alongside which she was berthed.
