Road-Vote Authorities Unanimous approval was giv.en at the No. 7 board conference of the Counties’ Association, held in Gisborne yesterday to a proposal 'that 'the Government be asked to complete road votes in time to permit county councils to call tenders for works not later than September 30 in each year. The proposal was advanced by the Cook County Council, on whose behalf Mr. E. H. Baker reviewed the difficulties encountered by local authorities owing to the late release of financial authorities for seasonal work. National Conference Venue. Delegates to the No. 7 ward conference of the Counties' Association held in Gisborne yesterday, expressed the view that a recent change of venife for the annual conferences of the association was a retrograde step. Mr. Harry Holford, a former resident of Gisborne who recently returned on a visit from South 'Africa, and who was a member of the 7th Contingent, N.Z.M.R., gave a highly interesting address on conditions ih Capfe Colony and the Transvaal immediately after the Boer War, and contrasted them with those ruling to-day. He was given a vote of thanks by acclamation. ■The secretary, Mr. J. V. Scott, reported that the 1948 annual conference would be held at Dunedin. Rugby Administration One of the outstanding features of the annual meeting of delegates to the New Zealand Rugby Union in Wellington last week was the tribute paid in speeches of appreciation of the remarlrable services rendered by Mr. S. S, Dean and the supporting applause when he was elected to life membership bf the New Zealand union, said Mr. M. H. Beuth, chairman of the management committee of the Poverty Bay union, during his report to the weekly meeting on Monday night concerning the Dominion assembly. Mr. Beuth said that Mr, Dean had indicated his intention td retire from the administrative work oh the completion of the current period ns chairman of the New Zealand union. Mr. Dean had also stated that he hoped to visit Gisborne during the tour of the Otago representatives, who are due to play in Gisborne on August 27. As a leading- Dominion administrator for many years, Mr. Dean would be n highly-esteemed visitor among Rugby supporters, said Mr, Beuth.
