LIGHTERMEN OUT
LONDON DOCK STRIKE TOTAL SHUT-DOWN FEARED EXTENSION OF HOLD-UP (10 a.m.) LONDON, April 28. About 4000 Port of London lightermen stopped work in sympathy for Glasgow dockers who have been on strike for six weeks as a protest against the dismissal of 500 on the Glasgow register on the ground that the Glasgow docks are overstaffed. Several thousand members of the Stevedores and Dockers’ Union are also striking. A union official estimated that a total of 10,000 lightermen and stevedores are idle. The Evening News says it is almost certain that the vast network of London docks will be at a standstill to-morrow. The Ministry of Labour promised to inquire into the Glasgow dock workers’ complaints if work is resumed. He added that work could be found, pending an inquiry, for the 50 men classified as redundant over whom the strike began.
