ARMY POPULAR
Since applications were called several weeks ago for 40 New Zealand Waacs to serve in the welfare section in Japan, Army Headquarters in Wellington has been almost inundated by girls applying by letter, telegram and telephone. An officer said applications had reached a three-figure total. Those who have applied have included both serving and former members of. the New Zealand W.A.A.C., the latter now back in civilian life. Some have served in New Zealand and some overseas, often with W.A.A.C. welfare units. The work to be undertaken in Japan will be along the same lines as that done in the Middle East and England during the war by the welfare section. Selection of the girls has not been made, but it is understood a start is to be made shortly. The draft will probably enter camp at Fort Dorset next month and will sail with the next N.Z.E.F. replacement draft. This is expected to be some time within the next two months.
