ARTIFICIAL AIDS
HOSPITAL PROVISION SOCIAL SECURITY HELP (S.R.) WELLINGTON. April 26. The Minister of Health, Mr. A. H. Nordmeyer, stated that hospital boards, under recently-gazetted regulations, would be empowered to provide certain artificial aids as part of their outpatient treatment, a substantial portion of the cost to be borne by the social security fund As a commencement these benefits would include artificial limbs, the valve type of hearing aids and contact lenses for certain optical conditions which could not be corrected by the usual type of spectacle lens. The Minister added that, as far as was practicable, the existing avenues of supply and distribution would be used. The date of the new benefits would be shortly announced when the supply and distribution arrangements were completed.
