FIRST SACRIFICE

CHRIST’S EXAMPLE TOLAGA BAY PARADE (Herald Correspondent.) “While our minds are turned upon the sacrifices of young and promising lives in the holocaust of war. let me recall to you the sacrifice of one life, not in any of the historical wars but in the war for righteousness. Two thousand years ago one Man, at the age of 33 years, gave His life that all might have forgiveness and eternal joy,” said the Rev. W. Bird, conducting the annual Anzac Day service in Tolaga Bay yesterday. The speaker declared that the principle of sacrifice had been laid down by Christ as the key to immortality, and that the crosses which marked the graves of the war dead were symbolic of the Cross of Calvary—-a promise of everlasting life. For those who had not shared in the sacrifice of life, there was a solemn duty to so manage their personal, community, national and international affairs that the outpouring of the nations’ best blood would not prove to have been in vain. The Tolaga Bay Anzac Day service was largely attended and the muster of returned servicemen for the parade held in connection with the service was the largest to date. The Gisborne City Band led the parade to the Memorial Gates at the Tolaga Bay Domain, where the religious observance was held. Large numbers of wreaths were hung upon the gates, including handsome tributes on behalf of the Tolaga Bay R.S.A. and the Uawa County Council. The City Band provided hymn accompaniments, and the “Last Post” was sounded by Mr. O. G. James.
