CEMENT SUPPLIES
DAM CONSTRUCTION WORK HELD UP MESSAGE TO CONTROLLER In an endeavour to obtain cement, as soon as possible for the continuation of the building of the Mangapoike dam, the Gisborne Borough Council decided last evening, to despatch a telegram to the shipping controller, asking that the next ship from Auckland should bring cement from Portland to Gisborne. The urgency of the work on the Mangapoike dam, was spoken of by the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, who said the work had now been held up for three weeks, owing to the lack of cement. With the winter coming on it was imperative that the dam should be finished. He thanked the members of a committee set up at the last meeting of (the Council, and consisted Mr. I. J. Quigley, the acting town clerk and borough engineer, for their work in endeavouring to obtain cement. Mr. Quigley reported that the traffic manager of the shipping company controlling the Pukeho had promised that she would bring cement to Gisborne on her present trip. Apparently the shipping controller had diverted the vessel, said Mr. Quigley, as no cement had arrived on the ship. The Gisborne Chamber of Commerce had recently conferred with the builders of the district, said Mr M. J.' White, and an urgent telegram had been sent to the shipping controller asking that cement should be shipped to Gisborne urgently. The veply received s v ited that if a berth was available at Portland on the next trip of the Pukeko, she would load cement for Gisborne. Mr White thought the council should support the chamber's action and on his motion Messrs Quigley, White and Selves, the acting town clerk, were appointed to draft a telegram to the shipping controller.
