DEFEAT OF CHAMPIONS
AUCKLAND TENNIS WOMEN'S FINALS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. The defeat of the national champions was a feature of the finals of the Auckland tennis championships. Miss M. Beverley, holder of the New Zealand singles title, was defeated in straight sets 6—3, 6—4, by Miss E. G. Attwood, of Auckland, whom Miss Beverley defeated in the recent national tournament. Miss Beverley and Miss B. Potter, holders of the national title, were beaten in the women's doubles by Mrs. R. W. Smith and Miss L. Adams, 3—6, 6—3, 6—3. A notable performance was scored in the men’s singles by a 20-year-old Dunedin intermediate, J. E. Robson, who defeated E. D. B. Lusk, 3—6, 6—2, 63, 6—2. Robson played fine tennis in scoring his first tournament singles victory this year. A. C. Steelman, former Davis Cup player, partnered J. W. Gunn to retain the men's doubles title from N. F. Bedford and J. A. Barrl. 6—2. B—6,8 —6, 6—4. R, W. Smith and Mrs. Smith beat the Otago pair, of Robson and Miss M. L. Kerr, in the final of the mixed doubles, 7 3—6, 6—3.
