NO PRIVATE TRADING

STATE HOUSING AREAS HUTT VALLEY CONTROL (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Jan. 29. The Government- has decided that there shall be no private enterprise allowed in Ihe establishment of commercial and trading businesses of any kind in the State housing areas of the Hutt Valley. It has agreed to a proposal by the Hutt Valley Consumers' Co-operative Society that the society should have exclusive control of such services. The policy has been laid down in general terms by the Minister of Rehabilitation, Mr. C. F. Skinner, in a letter to the president of the society, Mr. J. S. Berry,- replying to a request that the Government should definitely state its attitude to the society's aim to control trading and commercial business in the new housing areas of the valley. This announcement of policy at present affects only the Hutt Valley, but it is considered that the principle also has been laid down for other State housing districts m New Zealand, notably Tamaki and Orakei, near Auckland. which have yet to be fully developed. Though the Hutt Valley society has long been advocating such control of services in its area. Government support for the scheme has not previously been definitely given.
