TIME NOT CERTAIN

BID FOR__RELEASE LINER WANGANELLA AIR COMPRESSION TESTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Jan. 29. Optimism for the successful salvage of the Wanganella was renewed markedly to-day. There was especial relief at the resumption of the service given by the tugs. It was stated officially to-day:— “Everything is going extremely satisfactorily” on board the Wanganella, and it was indicated that a major attempt to remove the liner from the reef was imminent. When this attempt will be made has not been decided, despite reports that the time will be to-morrow morning. It is slated officially that tlie decision completely with Captain Me-. Donald, the marine underwriter surveyor of the Huddart Parker Company, who is still on board. If conditions are favourable, it is possible that a test will.be made in the morning. In that event, it may lift the liner clear of the reef. On the other hand, the test may show leakages in the air compression of the forward holds, requiring further work before the main effort can be made to free the liner. It was stated to-day that the use of explosives on the reef was not likely unless as a final measure, but much would depend on the outcome of the air compression attempt to lift the bow of the liner. A change in the position of the Wanganella, perhaps as a result of the air compression test, might make the use of the explosives on the reef expedient. Favourable conditions continue. The forecast up to 5 p.m. to-morrow is for winds, turning north-west to-day and becoming fresh to-morrow.
