DEATH BY DROWNING
GISBORNE MAN’S FATE ‘ln this case there is no injury to suggest foul play, nor, on the other hand, is there any evidence to suggest that the deceased intended to do away with himself,” said the district coroner, Mr J. Miller, S.M., when an inquest was held in Napier into the death of Arthur Albin Swanback, who was found dead on the Awatoto Beach on December 18. A verdict of death by drowning was returned. Evidence was given by Constable James Meikle that inquiries had revealed that the deceased was a resident of Gisborne. Just prior to the war deceased's wife had gone to Finland for a holiday, but the war had prevented her returning to New Zealand as soon as she had originally planned. Swanback had left Gisborne on December 5 to meet his wife, who was due to arrive at Wellington on December 7. He had failed to meet her.
