Flag From Titanic . A valued possession of St. Joseph’s Convent Balmoral, is an Irish flag saved from the ill-fated liner Titanic which sank with the loss of 1500 lives after striking an iceberg in mid-Atlan-tic on April 13. 1912. In charge of the flag locker' of the ship was Mr. Martin Connell an Irishman. Determined that the flag of Ireland should not sink with the ship, he tied it round his body and retained it until he was picked up from the water. Later he settled in Auckland and presented the flag to the school. Green, with the Union Jack in ' the top left corner and the Harp of Erin superimposed on it, the flag is flown by the school on special occasions. ; ■ . New Airways Services When the new National Airways’ Gisborne-Auckland. service commences next month, travellers will have the option of travelling north early in the morning or in the afternoon. The first north-bound aircraft will leave Gisborne at 7.30 o’clock each morning and will call at Tauranga and Auckland. The machine will then continue into Northland, going as far as Kaitaia by way of Whangarei. The secopd aircraft will leave Gisborne at 2.45 p.m. and fly direct to Auckland. Two machines each day will also return from Auck-, land to Gisborne, one coming by way , of Tauranga. Two machines will remain overnight at Darton Field,; and extra engineering staff* is, being .engaged and will be stationed at Gisborne to deal with the increased services. Little Fruit For Christmas

Prospects are that there will be little New Zealand-grown fruit available on the markets for Christmas. Harvesting of peaches and plums is now under way in Hawke’s Bay. but the yield will not be as great as last season. Estimated to produce only about 60.000 bushel cases, the peach crcp is light. Varieties at present being harvested are Brigg’s Red May, Le Vanquer and Sneed. "Crops of plums are generally more satisfactory, with cherry plums, Wilson’s Early and Duff’s Early Jewel already on the market and Billington and Wright’s Early almost ready for picking ' Although the I.M.D. has notified dates for receiving apples and pears, it is unlikely that there will be much, if any, in hand before Christmas because of the slowness of the fruit in sizing up.
