FINE EXHIBITION

GLADIOLUS DISPLAY HORTICULTURAL SHOW FLOWERS AND VEGETABLES Despite late frosts and strong westerly winds, gladiolus blooms were in good condition • and earned highly favourable comment from the judge at yesterday's gladiolus and summer show conducted by the Poverty Bay Horticultural Society in the Army Hall. After judging the blooms. Mr. R. G. Wilson, Taradale, said that on the whole they were a fine lot and were well up to the standard of previous shows. The champion bloom. Mr. F. Birkctt's Mrs. D. Both’s Memory, was an outstanding flower, and he had had little difficulty in choosing it as champion. The premier blooms in the other classes were also good flowers. He was pleased to see some new names among the competitors this year, which proved that the popularity of gladiolus was spreading. The judge of the cut flowers,, Mr. M. L. Stubbings, also commented favourably on the blooms in his classes, as did Miss McGhee and Mrs. J. Oman, who judged the decorative section. Vegetables were judged by Messrs. G. T. Maunder and E. Calcott. In opening the show yesterday afternoon. Dr. H. Colliding Rice congratulated the society on the fine showing of blooms, which proved that Gisborne gardeners could grow good flowers if they really wanted to, despite adverse summer conditions. A display of aquariums containing various types of coloured fish attracted a good deal of attention. Arranged by members of Ihc Gisborne branch of the Hew Zealand Aquarium and Water Garden Society, the nine aquariums were all of a good type, according to the judge. Mr. J. H. Walker. Mosaic photographs, displayed by the Poverty Bay Catchment Board, of erosion in the Gisborne district also attracted the attention of patrons of the show. Results: — Champion Gladioli in Show.—F.
