SCHOOL ATHLETICS

EAST COAST CONTESTS MANUTAHI LEADERS SPORTS AT RUATORIA Despite threatening weather, a most successful meeting of teams representative of district schools was held on Whakarua Park. Ruatoria. recently. The meeting will serve a$ an experiment. in the organisation of a similar da-,- early next year when a district team to compete in the East Coast schools' athletic contest in March, will be selected. Because of slight delays occasioned bv some showers and the lack of an extra pit to cater for the jumping events, the long programme had to be curtailed so that the buses conveying children to outlying districts coulcl leave on time. In order to make the contest between schools more interesting and to permit a greater number ot children to participate, the enrans from the larger schools, Manufahi and Hiruharama, were divided into three and two teams respectively. Manutahi competitors played a prominent part in the various events, the Manutahi C team heading the table of points, while Manutahi A and Manuiabi B filled third and fifth places respectively. The aggregate points secured by the respective teams were: Manutahi C, 36 points: Hiruharama B, 345; Manutahi A. 83; Waiongamai .28; Manutahi B. 27; Hiruarama G, 26; Reporua, lit; Makarika. 10.
