DEMOCRATIC LABOUR
BY-ELECTION POLICY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dee. 9. The Democratic Labour Party will meet shortly to determine its policy in the event of by-elections, said the Dominion secretary, Mr. F. M. Earle. The party would probably consider contesting any urban seat on its merits, contined Mr. Earle. The leader, Mr. J. A .Lee, was believed to favour such a policy as a means of keeping the Democratic Labour cause well to the front of politics. Had the party nominated candidates during the recent election campaign and dealt with such issues as Bretton Woods. State control of liquor and increased motherhood endowment —issues that were conveniently ignored by the Labour rtnd' National parties—it should have increased its 1943 poll to 60,000 or 80.000 votes.
The closeness of the election result made Democratic Labour’s action of importance in the days ahead.
