TRAFFIC PERMITS SOUGHT (10 a.m.) . SYDNEY. Dec. 10.

Consequent upon the signing of a bilateral agreement between the United States and the Australian Government, the British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines has applied to the Civil Aeronautics Board in the United States for traffic nermits. which must be obtained to enable an airline to operate.

Permission is being sought to enable un to four frequencies a fortnight, three of which will leave from Sydney and one from Auckland. As soon as these formalities are completed, the British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines will authorise Australian National Airways to operate the route as its contractor, using Skymaster planes carrying 36 persons. Preliminary flights for the purpose of completing the route organisation have already been carried nut, and a working arrangement has been entered into whereby Pan-American Airways will handle the ground services on the American end of the route —that is, Canton Island. Honolulu and San Francisco—and Australian National Airways will be responsible at, Fiji, Auckland and Sydney. Minor inter-governmental details still require to be concluded, but these are purely routine and it is confidently expected that both Pan-American Airways and Australian National Airwavs, on behalf of British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines, will be operating in the very near future.
