£92,000 Opium Theft
A quantity of opium estimated to be j worth at least £92,000 in revenue from j Chinese smokers has been stolen from a warehouse of a Melbourne firm of manufacturing chemists. The opium, which weighed 1851b5., was imported through the Customs Department for use in the preparation of medicines. The police say it may have been stolen for sale to the Chinese opium market throughout Australia by an underground organisation.
