FINE RESPONSE

GISBORNE APPEAL

Saturday’s weather in Gisborne was not particularly conducive to the success of any street appeal, but collectors on behalf of the obstetrical and gynaecological appeal found a good response from the public. A sum of £l3B 9s lOd was secured from sympathisers in the town area.

Many people were inclined to be quizzical regarding the necessity for an appeal which they felt should be met from State resources, and the collectors were frequently met with questions as to the purpose of the fund to which the Gisborne proceeds will be forwarded. The collectors handled the situation well, however, and made many converts to the cause for which they were working. Large numbers of people, on the other hand, were found to be almost automatic in their response., having become accustomed to meeting all authorised street appeals with modest contributions on the assumption that the organisers have satisfied the municipal authorities as to the worth of their cause. This attitude undoubtedly has been established by the restriction upon street-days to one per month, as a matter of council policy.
