PROGRESS OF PLAY

On the No. 1 wicket at the Oval H. 5.0.8. advanced their previous week’s total of 122 for nine wickets to 131 to lead Civil Service by the narrow margin of. three. With 142 on the board for seven wickets, Civil Service declared at 4.10 p.m. The captain, E. F. James, was top scorer with 45 not out, and A. Taylor had contributed 38. With an hour and three-quarters to play, the H. 5.0.8. batsmen went for runs. D. Cederwall scored a telling 38, D. A. Wells made top score for the match in carrying his bat for 50, and L. Roderick made 31 not out, the brisk scoring realising the total required, for an outright win 10 minutes before time. Marist’s reply to Rugby Old Boys realised 144 runs, of which J. Blane was responsible for 35. B. three for 37, R. Barbour, three for 38, and Jack Barbour, three for 55, shared bowling honours in this innings.

Rugby Old Boys, whose opening the previous week had yielded 239 runs, declared in the second at 4.40 p.m. with two wickets down for 81, the acting skipper. E. Martin, setting Marist the task of getting 176, or playing out time

if they were to avoid the outright defeat. Jack Barbour’s 43 in the Rugby

Old Boys’ second innings was one of the three best tallies of the game. One of the Marist openers, C. Scholium, opened out in the second innings to get 37 before falling to R. Barbour, but the only others to reach double figures were W. Purcell 10. and J. Hepburn 12. The Marist batsmen, however, held out long enough to check the R. 0.8. run of 10-point wins, having two wickets still in hand . when the time signal was given. H. McMillan in 'this innings returned the remarkable figures of three wickets for seven runs. Determined Reply On No. 3 wicket, City made a determined reply to the Old Boys’ opening score of 318. The captain, P. H. Dow, made a splendid 74 to record top score of the day, and W. Blair also punished the bowling for 50. When these rungetters were dismissed, wickets fell cheaply, but a tail-end fight by A. McLean and M. Rohan defied the attack for a vital half-hour and relieved the prospect of an outright defeat, the innings closing at 5 p.m. with the total at 102. T. Gedye, who took most of the tailenders, showed the very good figures of four for 20, though 11. Tapping had a more difficult task in getting four. of the early wickets for 37 runs. Following on, City scored 67 without loss before the cessation of play. In the B Grade game on No. 4 wicket H. 5.0.8. dismissed Marist for 67, J. Stokes, four for eight, and C. Swan, three for 19, leading the attack. P. Turnwald, 21, and P. Small, 19, were the only batsmen to reach double figures in this innings.

H. 5.0.8. ran up 152 for six wickets and declared, the total being their best so far for the season. J. Stokes, 58, and C. Swan, 48, were the principal scorers, and P. Turnwald, three for 28, was the leading bowler. A fine stand for 42 by B. Scholium was the feature of the Marist second innings. Though M. Parkes took three wickets for four runs and J. Stokes three for 18, H. 5.0.8. were unable to notch the outright win. Marist passed the necessary total to check this effort with four wickets still to fall, though having to cede the six-point decision on the first innings. Alert School Fielding

Particularly alert fielding played an important part in the crushing defeat inflicted by High School on Rugby Old Boys on the Rectory wicket. Despite the effective attack of the Rugby Old Boys’ bowlers, Slade, who took five wickets for 11 runs, and Campbell, who took four for 29, School opened with 118, of which J. R. Sheffield contributed 49, Bull 16, and Dunphy and Walker a dozen each. All out for 26 in their first innings, Rugby Old Boys were allowed even less opportunity in the follow-on, which barely yielded double figures, the 10 wickets going for only 14 runs. Again Dunphy and Sheffield were the wicketbreakers, the former taking four for three runs and seven for 10 in the respective first and second innings, while Sheffield's figures showed five for °o and three for two.
