ONE-DAY STRIKE
WATERSIDE PROTEST ANNUAL LEAVE ISSUE MEN FEEL CHEATED \ SYDNEY, Dec .6. All the Australian ports will be idle next Wednesday. The Federal Executive of the Waterside Workers’ Federation has called a one-day strike as a protest against the High Court injunction restraining the stevedoring commission from granting the waterside workers annual leave with pay. In Canberra the Minister of Labour, Mr. E. J. Holloway, condemned the employers’ attitude “in resorting to legal technicalities to cheat the men out of their annual leave.’’ A spokesman for the shipowners had no objection to the union’s claims for annual leave being considered by the appropriate tribunal, but they considered that the proper tribunal was one presided over by the judge of the Arbitration Court. Mr. Holloway said the employers’ attitude in resorting to legal technicalities to cheat men out of a universally accepted reform was not the way to get expeditious loading and unloading of ships.
