When the trial of officers involved in the abortive Portuguese Army rising at Oporto opened at Lisbon yesterday, the defence counsel said they had joined in the revolt believing it was a general military rising aiming not to provoke civil war. but to enable free elections to be held, reports Reuter’s correspondent in Lisbon Counsel added that when the officers realised the movement was not general they surrendered*
