RAIN IN NOVEMBER EAST COAST FIGURES HIGHER THAN LAST YEAR Rainfall recorded ai all East Coast stations last month were far in advance of the totals for November of last year. Totals for the 11 months of 194(1 "are much on a par with the rainfall up to the end of November last year, however. The month was a particularly cold one on the Coast, snow and hail falling on the back ranges near Cape Runaway. During November, 4.41 in. of rain fell on seven days at Rukuhanga station, Cape Runaway. This total was far in excess of the 0.75 in. which fell on four days during November last year. A 24-hour fall of 2.80 in. on November 22 swelled last month’s total considerably. The rainfall for this year, with only one month to go. is 52.77 in., slightly over lOin. more than for the corre-’ spondjng period last year.

An earthquake was experienced at the station at 6.25 p.m. on November 8. A slight frost was recorded on the night of November 11, while there was thunder and lightning on the night of November 18, and snow or hail on the back ranges, the Raukumaras, next day. Hicks Bay’s High Total Matarau station, Hicks Bay, also experienced a much heavier rainfall last month than in the corresponding period last year. November’s total was 6.50 in. on 10 days, compared with 1.03 in. on four days in the same month in 1945. A heavy fall was experienced on November 14, 2.90 in. being recorded in Mr. C. R. Wood's gauge in 24 hours. This year’s total of 78.29 in. is 12in. less than the recordings for the first 11 months of last year. With a 24-hour fall of 4.75 in. on November 14 the total for the month at Pakihiroa station, Ruatoria, reached 7.84 in., rain falling on 13 days. In November last year, only 2.72 in. fell on five days. During the 11 months of this year, 94.57 in. has been recorded at Pakihiroa, 2.5 in. more than for the corresponding period last year. At Wairere station. Ruatoria, the fall for the month was only 3.4 in. on nine days, the heaviest 24-hour fall being on November 22, when 1.34 in. was recorded. Last year's November fall was 1.76 in. The total for the 11 months of this year, 54.28 in.. is a little over 4in. less than the 58.47 in. which fell in the corresponding period in 1945. Tokomaru Bay rainfalls also proved much heavier last month than they were in November, 1945. At Owhena station, 5.37 in. was recorded in Mr. F. I. Maxwell’s guage, as against Q.99in. last year. The heaviest 24-hour fall las.t month was on November 15 when 2.28 in. was recorded. This year’s total to the end of November of 88. Gin. is aiso a big increase on the 08.34 in. recorded up to the same date last year. The raiufal! iast month at Ruangarehu station was not as substantial as at Owhena, only 3.13 in. falling, but this was 2.80 in more than during November, 1940. On November 22, l.OGin. was recorded, this being the heaviest 24-hour rainfall daring the month. The total of 53.35 m. for the 11 months of this year i s 9in. higher than for the corresponding period in 1945.
