THREE N.Z. TRAVEL BOOKS
Mr. A. H. Reed, in three books that have been published recently, makes a valuable contribution to the travel literature of New Zealand. They give vivid first-hand descriptions of the Far North, the East Coast of the North Island the Great Barrier.
“Fartherest North” is a 78-page volume telling of the author’s experiences, and describing accurately the secenery encountered on a walking tour from Awar.ui, along the coast to Spirits Bay. and down liie West Coast via the Ninety-mile beach There 1 are some pleasant illustrations and some informative maps which enhance the production.
“Fartherest East” describes another walking tour, taken from Tolaga Bay to Opotiki, around the picturesque, but not widely-known East Cape portion of the North Island. This area is rich in early New Zealand history. The author has re-captured much of the fascinating past, and in a readable style has recorded his impression of the iives of the people and the pioneering of their forbears. “Great Barrier. Isle of Enchantment” is written around a visit made to this, off the beaten track, island which commands the entrance to the Hnuraki Gulf. It is a place of fine scenic attraction, unequalled in many respects by the more frequently visited scenic spots on the mainland of New Zealand, and Mr. Reed has made' the most of the material he gathered in his visit. The three books provide delightful reading, and are illustrated with carefully chosen plates, which add to their worth. The vivid descriptive style of Mr Reed’s writing capably demonstrates that there is much of beauty and interest to see in New Zealand, which many travellers miss in these days when motoring takes people so rapidly past vistas which are worth some time if real employment is to be had from the countryside and sea borders —Published by A. FI. and A. W. Reed, .Wellington.
