SWEEPING GAINS
CHINESE COMMUNISTS BATTLE FOR CAPITALS FIGHTING IN THE NORTH PEKING. Dec. 4. Communist forces in sweeping new gains in North China are reported to be moving swiftly on Yangku. the capital of Shansi Province, and Fenyang, 60 miles southwards. The position of the Manchurian capital of Changchun has become more precarious following the Communists’ assaults 30 miles to the north and cast. Large Communist concentrations were reported east of Changchun. The Communists are withdrawing southward on the Kwangtung Peninsula and are now reported 17 to 20 miles from Dairen. Government reports say that the Communists are _ sending reinforcements into the attack on Paoting. the capital of Hopei Province. Heavy fighting is occurring 23 miles to the north and the same distance to the south of the city.
