NO COMPULSION
NURSES’ UNION DISPUTE
(11 a.m.) LONDON. Dec. 5. Replying in the House of Commons to questions about the union dispute over the status of nurses at Willesden, the Minister of Health, Mr . Aneurin Bevan said he was circularising local authorities that the maintenance of a smooth-running health service and the patients’ welfare were essential. He said he was anxious to see doctors and nurses join a union, but the matter should not be determined by unilateral action by local authorities. The Trades Union Congress’ advisory council has repudiated the Willesden Borough Council’s action in threatening to dismiss 51 nurses and doctors unless they join a union. The T.U.C. general council is expected formally to ratify the decision of the advisory council. The chairman, Mr. Gibson, said: “We never asked that the principle of compulsion should be applied to nurses.”
