BENEFITS SEEN

SWIMMING TUITION GISBORNE CLUB SCHEME (By “Plunge”)' The keen attention being given to the instruction at (he Monday evening coaching classes at the Mcßae Baths under the auspices of the Gisborne Amateur Swimming Club provides encouraging signs that the work of the several instructors is meeting with appreciation and a promising augury for the success of the club’s efforts to foster swimming among residents of the town and district. Events in the last two weeks have given indications ol' individual possibilities in the coming season. Lack of divers in the senior and intermediate classes kept the number down to two in each division. However, an attempt at handicapping diving is to be made and it is hoped that this will encourage the improving diver to compete. Miss Beth Penny displayed her usual neatness in performing her dives, and with practice should be in the first three of the Hawke’s Bay championships. N Clarry Scanian has improved in his dives. So have young Odams and Mangin Promise Shown Some promise is shown in the breaststroke swimmers. Miss A. CrawfordSmitb, who already holds the Hawke’s Bay junior girls’ breaststroke championship, appears to be a sitter for it this year, and if she is prepared to put in sufficient practice, her times might justify a nomination to compete in the New Zealand championships. Brown, a junior boy, has promise and may do well in the Hawke’s Bay championships. Odams is a first year intermediate, lias style, and should prove a speedster to he considered in the intermediate classes as he gets older. Not much has been displayed in the way of backstroke during these evenings. Free-style swimmers were in abundance.

Doug. McGregor seemed to be very fit and going along nicely, and also Howard Holmes. Both these lads have put in plenty of swimming up and down the baths, and are showing the benefit of consistent training.

Ken Morse, for a long distance swimmer, does not appear to be very fit, and will have to lengthen his training swims if he wishes to keep up to his past standard. Tommy Turnbull and Gordon Box looked to be making hard work of it, and it was quite evident that they both have to put in a lot of practice. T. Kerr, an intermediate girl, shows excellent promise in botli breaststroke and free-style. She has style and speed, and, if she decides to train, she has every chance of again representing Gisborne at the Hawke’s Bay championships. The control of the sports evenings can be improved, and the officials are well aware of it. It is the intention to smarten up the running of the events, and the first step to be taken will be to commence at 7.15 p.m.. at which time all .post entries will close.
