BOOM WOOL PRICES

BEST SINCE 1924 CHRISTCHURCH SALE TOP LINE MERINO 39fd (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 0. Average prices probably in excess of anything since the 1924 season were realised at the first Christchurch main wool auction yesterday. The catalogue was 18,097 bales of new wool, with 2500 greasy stock, and \BOO scoured slipe stock. Bidding was exceptionally keen from the Continent, with local mills buying almost all of the super wools offered. Some buying on American account gave useful support. Bradford operations were very limited. The sale was slow but steady throughout. The basis of values established early in the morning held all day. Passings were negligible. The biggest proportion of the offering was fine hoggets, with a good showing of other early shorn wools. In Outstanding Condition Following the mild winter and the excellent spring hogget wools from North Canterbury and Marlborough were in outstanding order. Some South Canterbury hoggets were dusty. Adult wools inclined to be dingy, but in general sound. The sale opened with the first lot making in excess of 30d, and that price was equalled or exceeded regularly during the day. The top price of 393 d was for a single lot of Merino and has seldom been exceeded in Christchurch. The best price for halfbreds was 363 d. Little fleece wool of any quality changed hands below 24d. Some Continental and all local men seemed to be operating without limits. Stock wools also met an excellent demand, and most of the catalogue was cleared. The official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Disposal Commission is as follows: —

“At the second Christchurch wool sale 18,100 bales of new season’s wool were offered and, in addition, 5187 bales on account of the New Zealand Wool Disposal Commission. The wool opened up in excellent condition and included a good selection of fine quality hogget wools. “There was a large attendance of buyers and competition was keen. The Continent, America and the local mills were the principal operators. Practically the whole offering of the new season’s wool • was sold at the auction. There was also a good clearance of the stock pile.” Official Range of Prices
