OARSMEN’S TIE

EXCEPTIONAL FINISH G.R.C. SECOND TRIALS FIRST-ROUND CONTESTS One of the most unusual events in the whole field of sports was registered during the week in connection with the Gisborne Rowing Club's Second Trial Fours, when two crews dead-heated after a spirited contest over a course of three-quarters of a mile. Dead-heats are not uncommon even in horse-racing. but in rowing they occur at intervals of years, the last previous event of the kind in the Gisborne club's record dating back several seasons before the outbreak of the war. The crews taking part in the race were B. Hankev, str., B. Lee. T. Healey and B. Lc Comptc. in the one crew, and K. Monk, str., J. Kane. D. McGlashen. and K Cassin in the other. They got away to an even start and there' was never more than half a length between the boats at any part of the ' course. Hankey was leading by half a canvas —about 4ft. —three lengths from the finish, but Monk roused his crew for a final effort and just drew level as they crossed the line. Three officials of the club agreed on the verdict of a dead-hcat. In the re-row of the race. Hankev got away to a very fast start and held the lead throughout, defeating Monk by a length and a-half. Other first-round races in the series resulted as under: — VV. Mills, str, P. Balfour. Ix. Norman and R W. Simmonds defeated R. Ogilvie, str., J Francis, FI. Alley and M. L. Murphy by two and a-half lengths. P. Sceats. str. P. Tapping. L. Gavin and C. A. Scott defeated IF. Patterson, str. R. Mills. K. Cassin and D. J. McGlashen by two lengths.

The semi-final and final races of tire series will be disposed of during the week-end when tidal conditions should be Highly favourable.
