TENNIS PARTY Miss Betty Bowen was hostess recently at a “miscellaneous” tennis party given at her home at “Maraetaha,” Muriwai, for Miss. Judith Caldwell, whose marriage takes place on Saturday. Tea was served informally m the drawing-room, which was massed with , large bowls of mixed blooms. T. Sinclair, the president, who wore ( a pink shoulder spray with her black ( gown. Floral tributes were offered to { Mesdames Sinclair, Legge and E. Hampton. j The following toasts were honoured: , “The King”; “Memory of Charles Dickens,” proposed by the president; ‘ “Committee,” proposed by Mrs. S. Robinson, “Tiny Tim,” proposed by Mrs. V. Clement. Mrs. Simmonds cut the handsome birthday cake, after which a community sing of Christmas carols opened a pleasant evening of items and dancin^t Misses Valerie Mcßreen. M. Cooper, M. Forshaw and Mr. Keith Graham, pupils of Miss Bobbie Scott, gave several dance numbers. A Dickens humorous sketch was portrayed by Mesdames N. Hooper and Sinclair. The ’ accompaniments were played by Mes- , dames E. Esquilant and E. The December meeting of the Victoria League was held on Monday afternoon in the Abercorn Hall, Mrs. L. Balfour presiding. Before the general business, Mrs. R. Hockley, the chairman, spoke briefly on the amount of work done by the president for the general good of the league and asked Mrs. Balfour to accept a floral token of appreciation from the members. , , . Welcomes were extended to one new member, Mrs. G. Pycroft, and three visitors, Mesdames Eyre and Clarke, Christchurch, and Mrs. O'Shea, Wellington. „ A former member, Mrs. A. R. Frethey, has consented to be the Gisborne- representative at the Victoria League, London. . . The president expressed her thanks to all members who had assisted vvith the change-over to the new premises and also the league members of the gardening circle, whose floral work for the official opening had been so outstanding. , ~ Miss Lois Evans, convener of the music circle, was also thanked for hei good work in connection with the entertainment of the league and accepted her bouquet on behalf of the choral gr Mrs. L. F. Sarten was fnrewelled, with good wishes for her future in Wellington. „ . , „ As this was the Christmas meeting of the league, Mrs. Balfour extended seasonal greetings to all present and reminded members that, as a group, they must be prepared for a busy ancl active year in 1947. Several well-appreciated numbers were given by the choir, who ended their programme with the traditional carols. Mrs. J. South was heard in two songs with Miss L. King at the piano and Miss Mitchell contributed tv/o pianoforte solos. Mrs. I. Stephenson was the choral accompanist. Mesdames H. C. Gregory, H. H. De Costa, R. J. Clarke and Miss N. Cotterill were in charge of the sales tables, the proceeds of which went to food parcels for Britain. Tea was dispensed by Mesdames J. S. Nugent and J. Cranswick.
