BLOW UP DESTROYER " EXPLOSIVES IN KITBAG ' PALESTINIANS ARRESTED ;<lO a.m.) LONDON, May 2. An attempt to blow up the British destroyer Chevron in Haifa harbour was foiled by the discovery of a kitbag filled with explosives in the destroyer's; messroom. says Reuter’s correspondent in Jerusalem. The Chevron arrived at Haifa from Alexandria on May .1 carrying 13 Palestinian naval- ratings who were due for discharge in Palestine. After the ratings had disembarked the kitbag was discovered placed in a position over the ship’s magazine and containing detonators fitted and fully primed and also a length of fuse. The ratings were arrested. One had a detonator and others had explosives concealed in their clothing. One of •the ratings, it i s reported, has been identified as a well-known terrorist. The Chevron was the destroyer which intercepted an illegal merchant vessel inside territorial waters off Tel Aviv on March 25.

The Daily Mail’s correspondent in Jerusalem says he has just retured from a 200-mile drive from Dan to Beersheba and from Jaffa to Amman across the Jordan. He says that during tbs trip he saw recently-built camDS, air bases and other military installat;ons which are already housing more than 100.000 British troops.
