ARAB AND ISLAMIC PEOPLES

REACTION TO PALESTINE PLAN

U.S. UNWILLING TO HELP TO DISARM BANDS (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (10 a.m.) LONDON, May 2. Representatives of the pan-Arab organisations in Egypt carried a resolution last night issuing a warning that a revolt throughout the Islamic and Arab East would follow the implementation of the Anglo-American Committee’s recommendations on Palestine. It was also decided to form a joint action committee to fight the committee’s report and called for Arab nations and the Islamic world to react promptly. In response to President Truman’s support of the recommendations on Palestine, Britain has forwarded to the United States a communication stating that if illegal armies in Palestine were not disarmed before any attempt was made to send 100,000 Jews into Palestine a situation will arise which will endanger the security of the Middle East. The communication suggests that illegal Jewish armies be disarmed and that the United States share in this disarming. The New York Times’ correspondent in Washington says that , Washington officials indicated that the Administration is not prepared to assist in disarmament. ” pctahlish order if the new Palestine

Even Mr. Attlee’s milder statement in the House of Commons that he intended to ascertain to what extent America wa s prepared to share in financial and military responsibility for administering Palestine met with a cool reception in Washington, adds the correspondent. . „ .. Senators Ball and La Follette they thought the United States ; had some responsibility but they believed that the United Nations.was the proper agency to handle Palestine affairs. The idea of using American troops either to disarm illegal Jewish armies or to

establish order if the new Palestine immigration policy led to outbreaks is generally opposed among members of Congress, nor is . there any general support in Washington for permitting any large-scale immigration of Jews info America. •

The correspondent says it is conceded at Washington that the disarming of illegal Jewish forces would be a considerable undertaking. . perhaps leading to bloodshed, but official circles do not consider that the disarming of those forces is a necessary prerequisite to the new immigration policy.
