FIGHTS IN TRIESTE
ITALIANS AND YUGOSLAVS BRITISH POLICE INTERVENE (9 a.m.) LONDON. March 24. Street fights occurred in the heart of Trieste to-day and the situation at one.time was ugly when Italian demonstrators clashed with Yugoslav sympathisers, says The Times’ correspondent in Trieste. The British garrison police were forced to intervene to restore order. The Italians, in the greatest outburst of pro-Italian feelings yet witnessed in .the city, marched in a procession at least two miles long, waving Italian flags and shouting pro-Italian slogans. Italian flags, which previously were not seen, magically appeared at thousands of windows in an impressive demonstration of hitherto suppressed pro-Italian sentiment. Yugoslav sympathisers _ staged a counter-demonstration with the reburial of 12 Partisans who perished during the German occupation. The British local police had a strenuous time keeping the two processions apart. Scuffles and stone-throwing occurred at several points
