STRIFE IN INDIES MOUNTBATTEN’S VIEW AGREEMENT IN SIGHT (10 a.m.) CANBERRA. March 26. Admiral. Lord Louis Mountbatten Allied Commander-in-Chief in SouthEast Asia, at a conference, said he expected the trouble in Indonesia to end soon. . The negotiations had passed the preliminary stage and the parties were now examining details of the proposed settlement. Lord Louis said that only 38,000 out of the original 750,000 Japanese in South-East Asia and Netherlands Indies had not yet been brought under the Allies. He expected these 38,000 to surrender to i’he British shortly. They were mostly in Java. Lord Louis Mountbatten to-day gave the Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifiey, a Samurai sword which he had brought from Singapoi'e. There was also one for the Duke of Gloucester.
