CALCUTTA FIGHTS
CLASHES AT POLLS COMMUNISTS & CONGRESS POLICE FIRE ON CROWDS CALCUTTA. March 24. One person was killed, 15 taken to hospital and 50 others injured in clashes between Congress Party supporters and Communists in Calcutta The clashes occurred in connection with to-day’s elections in Calcutta and suburbs for four Labour seats in the Bengal Legislative Assembly. Tension between the Communists and Congress Party supporters campaigning for votes has been increasing in the last ten days. Brickbats, staves and sodawater bottles were freely used in fights outside a number of polling stations.
The police opened fire on one incident at Bally, 10 miles from Calcutta, seriously wounding one person and followed this up with a lathi charge against a melee between Communist and Congress Party supporters outside a polling station in which 15 persons were injured and taken to hospital.
