On Thursday night Misses "Mick" Hansen and Barbara Langlanda gave a pre-wedding dinner party at tne home of the latter in Harris street for Miss Dawn Hansen, Saturuay's bride. Troughs of mixed marigolds, lilies and autumn leaves decorated tne drawing-room, while the dining table had a flat posy bowl ol pink, biue, and lemon statice and phlox. Miss Langlands greeted her friends wearing a frock of cream and green spotted sheer. Miss M. Hansen was in moss green wool georgette, and Miss D. Hansen wore a pink crepe frock self-trimmed.

FARMERS’ UNION W.D. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union took place on Friday afternoon in Adams' buildings, Mrs. K. Sncrratt being in the chair. Members were reminded of the annual meeting next month. Delegates were nominated to attend the twenty-first birthday of the division, to be held in Wellington. The afternoon tea hostesses under Mrs. R. J. Scott, group leader, were Mesdames C. E, Matthews, C. G. Holdsworth, Holmes, Hope, C. J. Sibley, P. W. Moasman, M. E. Sutherland, G. Cooper and G. V. Smith.

The retiring committee of the Tamarau Women’s Institute were recently invited to a social afternoon at the home of the president, Mrs. Gray, Wainui road. Winners of the various competitions were Mesdames Walworth, Gray and Holiamby, who were suitably rewarded.

Wearing a frock of turquoise blue crepe-de-chine, Miss Lex Thomson, Lytton road, welcomed her friends to a gift evening for Miss Dorothy McKinley, whose marriage takes place shortly. Asters in pinks and mauves decorated the reception rooms. Competitions and games were enjoyed until supper, after which the bride-elect and her ’maids. On Thursday afternoon the Baptist Women’s Missionary Union extended an invitation to all church women’s organisations to hear an address given by Miss Jean Thomson, 13. A., a former resident of this town. Over 100 women attended, and Mrs. E. M. Enright, who was in the chair, welcomed the guest speaker and also presented her with a shoulder spray. Miss Thomson spoke of her work in the famine areas of Eastern Bengal and gave a detailed description of Tripura State, near the Assam border, where she was appointed Christian educational adviser.

Following afternoon tea, an exhibition was given of photographs of various tribes with a sample of their native clothing. Miss Thomson lest on Saturday for her deputational work in the southern provinces and later will attend a short refresher course at the Auckland Training College.

METHODIST FIRESIDE CLUB On Wednesday evening Mrs. D. Tan* presided over a large attendance of the Methodist Fireside Club, held at "The Parsonage," Palmerston road, when several new members were enrolled. It was decided to hold all future meetings at "The Parsonage." An educational address was given by Miss Jean Thomson, Baptist missionary, on her experiences while in India. Members accorded her a hearty vote of thanks. Supper was in the hands of Mesdames S. Chiles. E. McCulloch and Lewis.

DICKENS' CLUB The annual meeting of the Dickens* Club was held at the home of the president, Mrs. E. A. Legge, Russell street. The report and balance sheet were read by the secretary, Mrs. V. Clement.

The election of two positions resulted in Mrs. Sinclair being made president and Mrs. E. A. Legge secretary. The club will continue to hold its meetings at the residence of Mrs. E. Hampton, Derby street. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. BIRTHDAY PARTY

Small Meg Buckland recently celebrated her fourth birthday at a children’s party given by her mother, Mrs. M. Buckland, Ormond. Belladonna lilies were used to decorate the house and the birthday table, on the sun porch, was a colourful picture with bright paper streamers and novelties. Mrs. Buckland received the guests in a frock of mist blue and white silk and Meg was in a pink and white striped print. Children present were Annabelle, Jennifer, Louise and Rosemary Bruce, Sally Reynolds, Jennifer Scannell, David Kemp, Gerald and David Stock, Rosemary Scott, Bridget, Timothy, Terry and Patrick Burke.
