AUSTRALIANS’ WIN INNINGS AND 160 RUNS WELLINGTON 161 IN SECOND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 26. In the third day’s play, of che cricket match between the Australians and Wellington at the Basin Reserve the Australians demonstrated their all-round superiority in every department of the tfame by winning: by the wide margin of an innings and 160 runs. On a pitch which was crumbling, the Australian spin bowlers yesterday got a lot of turn on the hall and largely owed their big victory to the brilliant bowling of the tall New South Wales slow left-hander. E. Toshack. who took six wickets for 40 off 26 overs. 12 of which were maidens. “Wellington had the worst of the stick in having to bat to-day on a wicket which was Starting to crumble.” said the captain of the Australian team, W. A. Brown, after the match. “Had we had to bat to-day we may also have found it difficult to get runs' on the wicket. Credit must he given to our spin bowlers for so successfully seising their opportunity. “I thought. Crawford batted well. He was not afraid to bit the ball. Requiring 294 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Tindni. 13. and Rice. 11. resumed Wellington’s second innings with 27 runs on without the loss of a wicket. The weather was fine, with a fresh southerly breeze. There were about 2000 spectators.

The innings, which lasted 191 minutes, closed at 2.30 p.m. for a total of 161. leaving Australia victorious by an innings • and 169 runs. , . , Toshack. who howled brilliantly, is one of the most impressive howlers Australia has sent to the Dominion. Keeping his arm well UP: he bowls a sharp olf-hreak to right handed batsmen and occasionally attacks with the orthodox left-hander’s leg break. He is too fast through the air to get out to him on the full, and varies the pace, flight and spin cleverly. Score’:—
